What is an EDI 879?
The EDI 879 Price Information is the ANSI X12 transaction set that lets a manufacturer, supplier, broker or agent provide a trading partner with pricing information. It belongs to the grocery and consumer goods family of transaction sets, alongside the 888 item maintenance and 889 promotion announcement, and uses grocery-style G-segments.
Pricing sent by 879 typically includes list costs, the dates they take effect and the items they apply to. Buyers load it so that their orders carry the correct cost and supplier invoices match without deductions.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 879, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 879 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.
When it is used
- Announcing new list costs and effective dates
- Sending price changes for existing items
- Keeping a broker's or distributor's pricing current

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 879 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 879 in practice
A snack manufacturer raises list costs on a product line from the first of next month. It sends an 879 to each wholesale customer with the affected items, the new costs and the effective date. The wholesalers load the costs into their purchasing systems, so orders placed after that date carry the new cost and invoices match.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 879
- Send price information well before the effective date so partners can load and approve it.
- Use the same item identifiers and units of measure that orders and invoices use.
- Agree with each partner whether pricing travels in the 879, the 832 or both.
