What is an EDI 272?
The EDI 272 Property and Casualty Loss Notification is the ANSI X12 transaction set used to provide a flow of loss information between property and casualty insurance companies, agents, service providers and industry bureaus.
The first notice of loss starts the claim: who was involved, what happened, when and where, and what was damaged. Agents report losses for their clients, and insurers share loss data with bureaus for statistics and fraud detection. Electronic notification lets the insurer assign an adjuster immediately.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 272, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 272 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.
When it is used

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 272 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 272 in practice
A client calls an independent agent after a kitchen fire. The agent's system sends the insurer a 272 with the policy, the date and cause of loss, a description of the damage and contact details. The insurer opens a claim and assigns an adjuster within the hour.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 272
- Report losses promptly, as policies require.
- Include contact details so adjusters can reach the client.
- Protect claimants' personal data under applicable law.
- Use loss cause codes the insurer recognizes.
