What is an EDI 926?
The EDI 926 Claim Status Report and Tracer Reply is the ANSI X12 transaction set a carrier uses to report the status of a claim to the claimant or to reply to a claim tracer (925). It can acknowledge a new claim, report that it is under investigation, or report that it has been paid, partly paid or declined, with reasons.
Claimants use 926 data to update their claim records, recognize recoveries in finance and decide whether to appeal declined claims.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 926, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 926 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.
When it is used
- Acknowledging a new claim
- Replying to a claim tracer
- Reporting payment or declination of a claim

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 926 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 926 in practice
A carrier completes its investigation of a damage claim and agrees to pay part of the amount. It sends the shipper a 926 with the claim number, the amount allowed, the amount declined and the reason. The shipper's claims system records the recovery and flags the declined portion for review.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 926
- Report reasons for partial payments and declinations.
- Reference the claimant's claim identifiers as well as the carrier's.
- Reconcile reported payments with the funds received.
- Respond to tracers within the agreed time.
