What is the EDIFACT DOCADV message?

DOCADV is the UN/EDIFACT documentary credit advice. The directory defines it as a message indicating to the beneficiary the terms and conditions of a documentary credit originated by the issuing bank and received by the advising bank, or an intermediary advising bank.

For the exporter, the advice is the starting point for shipment: it sets the deadlines, the shipment terms and the exact documents to present. Exporters check the advice against the sales contract and request amendments where it cannot be met.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends DOCADV, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around DOCADV and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide, such as an industry subset or a partner’s own guide, usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.

Structure

Mandatory segments in DOCADV (directory D.21A)

In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the DOCADV message has 57 segment positions arranged in 17 segment groups. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes.

Practical example

DOCADV in practice

A German machinery exporter's bank receives a letter of credit issued in Kenya. It sends the exporter a DOCADV with the credit's terms: the amount, expiry, latest shipment date, ports and required documents. The exporter's documentation team checks it against the contract and plans the shipment and documents to comply.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for DOCADV

  • Check terms against the sales contract on receipt.
  • Plan documents to match the credit exactly.
  • Request amendments early if terms cannot be met.
  • Track expiry and presentation deadlines.
