What is the EDIFACT DOCAMI message?
DOCAMI is the UN/EDIFACT documentary credit amendment information message. The directory defines it as a message indicating the terms and conditions of an amended documentary credit, sent from the issuing bank to the applicant or the applicant's bank.
It confirms to the importer what the bank changed in response to an amendment request, so the importer can check the result. The beneficiary learns of the same amendment through its advising bank, and the amendment binds the beneficiary only once accepted.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends DOCAMI, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around DOCAMI and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide, such as an industry subset or a partner’s own guide, usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.
When it is used
- Confirming an amendment to the applicant
- Providing the amended terms for checking
- Recording amendment numbers and dates

Structure
Mandatory segments in DOCAMI (directory D.21A)
In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the DOCAMI message has 20 segment positions arranged in 3 segment groups. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes.

Practical example
DOCAMI in practice
After extending a credit's shipment and expiry dates, the issuing bank sends the importer a DOCAMI with the amendment number and the revised dates. The importer's system updates the credit record and alerts the purchasing team that the exporter now has three more weeks to ship.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for DOCAMI
- Compare the amended terms with what was requested.
- Track amendment numbers in sequence for each credit.
- Watch for the beneficiary's acceptance or refusal.
- Keep internal shipment plans in line with the amended terms.
