What is the EDIFACT PASRSP message?

PASRSP is the UN/EDIFACT interactive travel, tourism and leisure product application status response. The directory defines it as a message sent in response to a product application status request (PASREQ), telling a service supplier that requests should or should not be sent for an application or product.

The response lets the requesting system decide immediately whether to route traffic to the supplier, avoiding failed requests and poor response times for travelers and agents. It is part of supplier connectivity management, used by distribution systems to decide where to route requests.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends PASRSP, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around PASRSP and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.

Structure

Mandatory segments in PASRSP (directory D.21A)

In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the PASRSP message has 8 segment positions arranged in 1 segment group. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes. This structure comes from one published copy of the directory and has not been independently verified: confirm it before you build a map.

Practical example

PASRSP in practice

After a maintenance window, a distribution system sends a hotel chain a PASREQ asking whether its application is available. The chain responds with a PASRSP confirming that requests may be sent, and booking traffic resumes.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for PASRSP

  • Respond quickly, since traffic depends on the answer.
  • Reflect the true state of the application.
  • Coordinate status with planned maintenance windows.
  • Log status changes for later service reviews.
