What is the EDIFACT RESETT message?

RESETT is the UN/EDIFACT reinsurance settlement message. The directory defines it as a message exchanged by insurers, reinsurers, bureaux, brokers and professional reinsurance intermediaries carrying the information needed to identify, reconcile and set off technical accounts.

Reinsurance balances arise from many technical accounts, which report premiums, claims and commissions per contract. The settlement message groups the accounts being settled and the resulting net amount, so cash movements can be matched to the underlying accounts. Settlements can cover accounts in several currencies, so the exchange rates applied must be stated and agreed.

How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends RESETT, to whom, and which messages usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what the directory D.21A itself requires: the envelopes around RESETT and the segments and segment groups it marks mandatory. Conditional groups are listed by their trigger segment rather than drawn in full. This is the directory's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: a message implementation guide, such as an industry subset or a partner’s own guide, usually makes some conditional groups mandatory, restricts the codes and may use an older directory.

Structure

Mandatory segments in RESETT (directory D.21A)

In UN/EDIFACT directory D.21A, the RESETT message has 35 segment positions arranged in 6 segment groups. These are the segments and segment groups marked mandatory at message level, in order; a mandatory group is shown with the segment that starts it. Segments inside conditional groups are needed only when the group is used. This is the directory’s requirement, not your trading partner’s: each partner’s message implementation guide names the directory it uses, often an older one such as D.96A or D.01B where the structure can differ, makes some conditional segments mandatory and restricts the codes.

Practical example

RESETT in practice

A broker settles a quarter's reinsurance balances between a cedent and a reinsurer. It sends both a RESETT listing the technical accounts included, their balances and the net amount due to the reinsurer. Both parties match the payment to the accounts listed and close them in their ledgers.

Implementation

Implementation considerations for RESETT

  • List every technical account included in the settlement.
  • Reconcile settlements with cash movements.
  • Handle currencies and exchange rates consistently.
