What is an EDI 110?
The EDI 110 Air Freight Details and Invoice is the ANSI X12 transaction set used to provide a customer with an air invoice for transportation and other charges related to shipments. It covers original invoices, past due billings, balance due bills and revisions.
Each 110 references the air waybill and lists the charges, such as weight charges, fuel and security surcharges and accessorial services. Shippers audit it against the shipment data they sent (often in a 104) and their contracted rates before paying.
How to read this diagram: the top row shows who sends the 110, to whom, and which documents usually come before and after it. The lower part shows what X12 release 008010 itself requires: the envelopes around the 110 and the segments and loops the standard marks as required, area by area. Optional loops are listed by the segment that starts them rather than drawn in full. This is the standard's minimum, not a trading partner's requirement: each partner's implementation guide usually makes some optional loops mandatory, restricts the codes and may use a different release.
When it is used
- Invoicing air freight shipments
- Billing balance-due or revised charges
- Sending past due billing notices

Structure
Mandatory segments in the 110 (X12 release 008010)
The segments X12 release 008010 marks as mandatory at their level, in order. Segments inside optional loops are needed only when the loop is used. This is the standard's requirement, not your trading partner's: each partner's implementation guide names the release it uses, adds the optional segments it requires and restricts the values. The requirement status comes from one published X12 reference listing and has not been checked against a second source.

Practical example
The 110 in practice
A forwarder invoices an electronics company for a week of air shipments. It sends a 110 for each air waybill with the chargeable weight, the rate, fuel and security surcharges and a residential delivery charge. The company's freight audit system compares the charges with the contracted rates and approves all but one invoice, which it disputes for a dimensional weight difference.
Implementation
Implementation considerations for the 110
- Reference the air waybill and shipper references on every invoice.
- Distinguish original invoices from revisions and balance-due bills.
- Itemize surcharges so they can be audited against contracts.
- Reconcile payments to invoices, since air freight often has many small adjustments.
